The 1984 Chevy Monte Carlo SS and Terry Labonte

The 1984 NASCAR season was Terry Labonte’s year. After a up-and-down season, Labonte narrowly secured the championship title with a lead of just 60 points over Harry Gant.

This of course also delighted his team, Hagan Racing, and the new primary sponsor, Piedmont Airlines.

While Dale Earnhardt temporarily drove a Ford in the early ’80s, he missed the introduction of the long-awaited new Chevy Monte Carlo SS.

The new Chevy was no typical family sedan. It was a special development with a specific goal: competitiveness and performance in NASCAR.
To stay competitive against the new Fords, an aerodynamically shaped body was needed. In addition, the “Aero Nose” and a special rear spoiler were developed that complied with NASCAR regulations. The sleek Monte Carlo SS was born.

With the dominant Monte Carlo SS, Chevrolet won the manufacturers’ championship in a row from 1983 through 1987. In 1984 alone, the checkered flag fell for Chevy in an incredible 21 of 31 races.

The Model Kit

This 1984 Monogram model kit is a Chevy Monte Carlo SS.
The kit is molded in white with clear and chrome-plated parts and includes a complete “Piedmont” decal sheet.

The car is painted in two colors, which makes the build quite straightforward overall. This Monogram Chevy Monte Carlo SS fits perfectly into the NASCAR Grayside rules.
