The 1986 Ford Thunderbird and Alan Kulwicki
Born in Greenfield, Wisconsin, Alan Kulwicki had been racing stock cars for more than ten years before he moved up to the sport’s top divisions. In 1984, for example, he was one of the top five drivers in the American Speed Association (ASA).
Still, hardly anyone knew him when he moved up to NASCAR’s top series in 1985. Nevertheless, he managed to find a sponsor for five races. He started in a brand-new Ford Thunderbird owned and built by Bill Terry. His first start was at the September race in Richmond.
Kulwicki narrowly missed qualifying for the following Daytona 500 after losing a position on the last lap. Even so, he did not give up.
At the next race in Rockingham, he finished as the top rookie. That was exactly what he had been hoping for. He promptly bought the car from Bill Terry, founded his own team, “AK Racing,” ran 23 more races that season, and won the “Rookie of the Year” title that same year.
The Model Kit
This Monogram model kit from 1995 is a 1986 Ford Thunderbird.
The kit is molded in white with clear and chrome-plated parts and includes a complete “Quincy’s” decal sheet as well as a photo.
The car is painted in two colors, so assembly is quite straightforward overall. This Monogram Ford Thunderbird fits perfectly into the NASCAR Grayside rules.
