The 1995 Chevy Monte Carlo and Joe Nemechek

Joseph Frank “Joe” Nemechek III ended his full-time career in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2015. Since then, he has made part-time starts in the Xfinity Series, driving the Toyota Camry #87 for NEMCO Motorsports.

Nemechek won the Busch Series championship in 1992 and was voted most popular driver there in 1992 and 1993.

During his 23-year Cup career, he started 667 races beginning in 1993, earned 10 pole positions, finished in the top 10 a total of 62 times, and made it to Victory Lane 6 times.

The fifth generation of the Chevy Monte Carlo replaced the coupe version of the Lumina in 1994. The Monte Carlo name was thus revived after a hiatus and marked a turning point for Chevrolet.
No V8 engine was offered for the Monte Carlo anymore and, a revolution for the American automotive market, it was the first Chevy with front-wheel drive.

The coupe shared its platform with the Pontiac Grand Prix, which had already been racing successfully in the NASCAR series in previous years.

In 1995, Chevy returned to NASCAR after the Lumina years. The sanctioning rules allowed wider rear fenders on the Monte Carlo, which had a positive effect on the car’s performance. Chevrolet earned various manufacturer victories with the Monte Carlo until production of the street version was finally discontinued in 2007.

Starting in 2008, the Impala replaced the Monte Carlo in the NASCAR racing series.
