Ed McCulloch
Ed “Ace” McCulloch began racing in the Top Fuel class in 1964 and moved to the Funny Car class in 1969.
Early in his career, McCulloch said that the mechanical side of the sport was what he loved most. Together with his brother Dan, he built a Chevy-powered Top Fuel dragster in 1964.
Since Ed had more driving experience than his brother, he did the test runs before his brother took over the car.
The second time they were at Woodburn Dragstrip, their dragster ran well. So well, in fact, that on one pass McCulloch didn’t even lift the front end, so the front wheels barely touched the strip. This made the car unstable, and at the finish line McCulloch hit the concrete block holding the timing system’s photocell, tore off the entire front axle, and rolled over several times.
That was it for McCulloch; he didn’t want to drive anymore.

However, his partner Jim Albrich didn’t want to drive either, so they hired a driver from Southern California. But since that became too expensive in the long run, McCulloch reluctantly got back behind the butterfly steering wheel.
“When I started driving again, I got the feel for it. Besides, I didn’t have any other choice,” said McCulloch.
His instinct didn’t fail him: as early as 1965, they knocked Pete Robinson out of the No. 1 spot on the Drag News Mr. Eliminator list at Woodburn and defended the top position for several years.
Now drag racing was what Ace wanted, and he loved it.
Things didn’t go as well in the 1970s, but at the start of the 1980s McCulloch won back the top spots.
With title sponsor Miller behind him, his Funny Cars were built by Bernie Fedderly and Dan Olson. Ed McCulloch set a record with 12 wins and 17 runner-up finishes.
Finally, in 1988 he won the U.S. Nationals and was named Car Craft Driver of the Year for the second time.
