Dale Earnhardt
You could fill entire books about Dale Earnhardt. He was one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history. A legend. The “Intimidator.”
Earnhardt was as beloved as he was feared, by his fans and his fellow drivers alike. The tough veteran showed no mercy when it came to racing and never gave an inch in a battle on the track.
In 27 years as a NASCAR Cup driver, he started 676 races, won nearly 100 of them, and captured a total of seven championship titles.
In 1997, he went winless for only the second time in his career. That year, he also flipped his car onto its roof at the “Great American Race,” the Daytona 500, ten laps from the finish.
Exactly four years later, also at the Daytona 500, Dale Earnhardt’s Goodwrench Chevy made contact with Sterling Marlin’s car in the final turn of the last lap. Senior crashed into the wall and was killed in the accident.
Since then, there has been absolute silence on the third lap of the Daytona 500, and fans hold up three fingers in the air to honor Dale Earnhardt.
