The 1998 Ford Taurus and Mark Martin

The assignment Ford gave to Don Miller, then president of Penske Racing, in 1997 was as clear as it was unmistakable: Build a race car!
But it couldn’t be just any car. It had to be the car that would carry Ford’s NASCAR racing legacy into the 21st century. Oh, and it had to be done fast. Ford wanted the race car to compete in the 1998 season, NASCAR’s 50th anniversary.

Miller was actually busy looking after one of the most powerful and successful Thunderbirds for Rusty Wallace, but he soon put the first ideas for the future Taurus on paper, and it was to be unveiled just 107 days later.

The project moved forward quickly, and the theoretical concept grew into a 1:2.5 scale model that was tested in the wind tunnel. Shortly afterward, the first full-size Taurus could be presented to the public.

The real work was only just beginning, though, because the new Taurus had not yet been tested on the track by December 1997, just two months before its planned racing debut.

In its very first race, the new Ford Taurus, driven by Rusty Wallace, won the legendary Budweiser Shootout at Daytona. The future of Ford Racing was secured…

Another successful season was also about to begin for Mark Martin.
After 1990 and 1994, he finished the 1998 season in second place behind Jeff Gordo.
In more than 31 years as a NASCAR driver, Mark Martin secured nearly 100 individual wins and over 600 top-10 finishes.
In 2015, Mark Martin was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame.

The Model Kit

This SnapTite model kit from Revell Monogram, released in 1998, is a Ford Taurus.
The body comes factory-painted and already finished in the Valvoline design. Peel ‘n Stick decals are included for additional detailing.

SnapTite and ProFinish models are very easy to assemble and are therefore also suitable for beginners in model building. In addition, the bodies are very sturdy and work very well as durable slot racing bodies.

Notice

This model kit is not a children’s toy!
It contains small parts that can easily be swallowed. Never leave children under 10 years of age unattended with a model kit like this!

Please note that the included decals may be brittle due to their age. If you want to use them, you should definitely pre-treat the decals before soaking them in water and coat them with a suitable film!
I accept no liability whatsoever for the fit, condition, or functionality of the decals!
