The 2001 Chevy Monte Carlo and Kevin Harvick
Kevin “The Closer” Harvick was born in 1975 in Bakersfield, California. After his parents gave him a kart in 1980 for successfully finishing kindergarten, the racing career of “Mr. Where did he come from?” began. Over the following years, Harvick collected numerous wins on the kart tracks as well as nine championship titles.
For a school project in fifth grade, Kevin Harvick made a poster showing himself racing in the Indy 500. While still in school, Kevin competed in various Late Model races and in the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series. Eventually, his father, who ran a shop called “Harvick Motorsports” alongside his work as a firefighter, built him a race car for the lower NASCAR series.

Although Harvick’s original plan was to study architecture, he followed his heart and decided to become a professional race car driver, just like his idol, four-time Indy 500 winner Rick Mears, who also hails from Bakersfield.
Via the Craftsman Truck Series and the Busch Series, Harvick, who by then was under contract with Richard Childress, finally made it to the Cup Series in 2001 because of a tragic circumstance: the death of Dale Earnhardt at the Daytona 500. Originally, Childress had planned to run his newcomer in only seven races that year and full-time starting in 2002.
After Dale Earnhardt’s death, Harvick took over his seat starting the following week.
The car number was changed from 3 to 29, and the car was painted in an inverted color scheme.
Just three weeks after Earnhardt’s death, in his third Winston Cup (now Sprint Cup) race, Kevin Harvick won the “Cracker Barrel Old Country Store 500” at Atlanta Motor Speedway. He scored the closest win in NASCAR history, beating Jeff Gordon by only 6/1000 of a second.
After his win (his 3rd race, 3 weeks after Earnhardt’s death), Harvick did a burnout down the front stretch and stuck three fingers out of the side window into the air in memory of Dale Earnhardt.
The record he set as the fastest winner after his racing debut had previously been held by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Dale Earnhardt…
