The 1995 Chevy Monte Carlo and Sterling Marlin

Sterling Marlin began his NASCAR career in 1976 and went on to start a whopping 748 races through 2009.

He won the Daytona 500 in 1994 and 1995. Marlin’s record also includes 11 pole positions, 216 top-10 finishes and 10 wins in total.
He finished the 1995 season in third place after three wins.

The fifth generation of the Chevy Monte Carlo replaced the coupe version of the Lumina in 1994. With that, the Monte Carlo name returned after a hiatus and marked a turning point for Chevrolet.
No V8 engine was offered for the Monte Carlo anymore and – a revolution for the American automobile market – it was the first Chevy with front-wheel drive.

The coupe shared its platform with the Pontiac Grand Prix, which had already been racing successfully in the NASCAR series in previous years.

In 1995, Chevy returned to NASCAR after the Lumina years. The sanctioning body allowed wider rear fenders on the Monte Carlo, which had a positive effect on the car’s performance. Chevrolet scored numerous manufacturer wins with the Monte Carlo until production of the street version finally ended in 2007.

Starting in 2008, the Impala replaced the Monte Carlo in the NASCAR racing series.
