The 1975 AMC Matador and Bobby Allison
In the early 1970s, American Motors Corporation (AMC) surprisingly entered the NASCAR racing series with the Matador. This caused shrugs and some resentment among a few NASCAR old-timers, since AMC had done nothing for racing up to that point.
With Penske Racing, AMC backed the right team, as Mark Donohue and Bobby Allison were drivers with considerable potential behind the wheel.
The Matadors that Hutcherson-Pagan built for Penske in 1972 were the first stock cars with disc brakes. After Donohue won the “Western 500” with the AMC Matador, other manufacturers followed suit with the brake upgrade.
The 1974 Matador coupe replaced the “flying brick” of the first generation and was significantly more aerodynamic. Several wins for the Penske team soon followed, e.g. the “Winston Western 500” at Riverside, the “Los Angeles Times 500” at Ontario, the “Rebel 500” and the “Southern 500” at Darlington, as well as a few others. At the 1975 “Daytona 500,” Bobby Allison finished second in his AMC Matador.
The Model Kit
This very rare model kit from AMT ERTL is a 1974 AMC Matador in its unmistakable blue, white and red design.
Thanks to its model year, the Matador fits perfectly into the Grayside Era of the NASCAR124 slot racing series and adds a welcome change of pace to the starting field.
The molded parts are cast in light gray.
