The Raybestos Buick
The Raybestos Buick Regal entered the Winston Cup with the stated goal of becoming a milestone in stock car racing. And rightly so, because with Hut Stricklin behind the wheel, 1991 became the “Buick Year.”
For many years, Buick served as the stand-in for Chevrolet in American motorsports. As early as the 1960s, Buick fought for victory at the Indianapolis 500 and (like most American automakers) had several cars on the starting grid in the Grand National stock car series.
The “golden age” of Buick in motorsports, however, was the late 1980s and early 1990s. General Motors introduced the Regal, which made a big splash primarily as a Grand National model and was a fierce competitor to the Oldsmobile Cutlass in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.
In the 1990s, however, Buick’s winning streak in motorsports came to an end, after GM replaced the brand with Oldsmobile for many years. Oldsmobile was finally replaced by Pontiac in 2004, and since 2009 Chevrolet has reigned as GM’s sole representative in American motorsports.
Hut Stricklin
Waymond Lane “Hut” Stricklin was born on June 24, 1961, and is married to Pam Allison, daughter of NASCAR legend Donnie Allison. He was the last member of the “Alabama Gang,” which consisted of well-known names such as Bobby and Donnie Allison, Red Farmer, Jimmie Means, Neil Bonnett and Dale Earnhardt.
In 1987, Hut Stricklin won the NASCAR Dash Series championship. The following year, he made his Winston Cup debut. Just two years later, he finished the season as runner-up behind Dick Trickle for Rookie of the Year, driving for car owner Roy Osterlund.
In his second season, Stricklin only competed in three races before taking over the wheel of Bobby Allison’s #12 Raybestos Brakes Buick Regal. 1991 became his breakout year, which he finished 16th in the championship standings with a 2nd-place finish at Michigan International Speedway.
