The Ford Thunderbird

Fords in Thunderbird form were competing in the NASCAR racing series starting in 1977. With this, Ford began the trend of running luxuriously styled coupes on the race track. Despite all the naysayers, Bobby Allison won 13 races in his Thunderbird for owner Bud Moore between 1977 and 1980, even though the cars were boxy and not very aerodynamic.

Between 1981 and 1997, the somewhat smaller and aerodynamically optimized Thunderbirds were very successful in the stock car series, before they were replaced starting in 1998 by the Taurus bodies. The Thunderbirds of the 1983-1988 era regularly broke the 200 mph (312 km/h) mark, and at Talladega Superspeedway they even reached 212 mph (341 km/h).

Bill Elliott and Davey Allison were exceptionally successful with these race cars, and the crowning achievement was Elliott’s 1988 championship win.

Mark Martin

Mark Anthony Martin was born on January 9, 1959, and is still an active driver in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. On the Stewart/Haas Racing team of owner Tony “Smoke” Stewart, he alternates between the number 55 and Smoke’s 14.

In the Nationwide Series, he is the second most successful driver with 49 wins. In the Sprint Cup overall standings, he finished second five times, and the American sports network ESPN once aptly called him “The best driver to never win a championship.” He is currently the oldest and probably most experienced driver in the Sprint Cup.

The Model Kit

This AMT Ertl model kit from 1992, with over 110 parts, is a Ford Thunderbird. The hood can be displayed open, revealing the detailed 650 hp, 358 cu in V8 engine.

Included are, among other things, a complete roll cage, engine, oil cooler, fire extinguisher, Butler racing seat, dashboard, a detailed fuel cell with filler and vent neck, Goodyear tires, and NASCAR racing wheels.
A very nice model for the display case or for building an unusual slot car according to the Sakatsu / Thunder rules.

Notice

This model kit is not a toy for children!
It contains small parts that can easily be swallowed. Never leave children under 10 years of age unattended with a model kit like this!

Please note that the included decals may be brittle due to their age. If you want to use them, you should definitely pre-treat the decals before soaking them in water and coat them with a suitable film! I do not accept any liability for the usability of the decals!
