The 1988 Olds and Lake Speed
Race car driver Lake Chambers Speed (born 1948) was a typical “one-hit wonder” during his active career. In 402 starts over the course of 18 years, he scored one win. It came at the spring race in Darlington, the TranSouth 500.
Speed started in eighth position, steadily worked his way to the front during the race and pulled clearly away from the field. After leading 178 of 367 laps in total, Lake Speed took the checkered flag in his Oldsmobile with a lead of more than half a straightaway over Alan Kulwicki.
Interestingly, Speed was the only driver willing to test the new Hoosier tires at Darlington. While everyone else was convinced the tires would blister, the team around owner-driver Lake Speed trusted them and was rewarded.
The Model Kit
This 1988 model kit from Monogram is an Oldsmobile Cutlass.
The kit is molded in white with clear and chrome-plated parts and includes a complete “Wynn’s / K-mart” decal sheet.
The car is painted in two colors, so painting experience is an advantage. This Monogram Olds fits perfectly into the NASCAR Grayside rules.
