Davey Allison
David Carl “Davey” Allison (February 25, 1961 – July 13, 1993) was a race car driver in various NASCAR series.
The son of racing legend Bobby Allison was best known as the driver of the #28 Texaco-Havoline Ford for Robert Yates Racing in the Winston Cup Series. Together with his uncle Donnie Allison, Red Farmer and Neil Bonnett, Allison was part of the legendary “Alabama Gang.”
After starting out successfully in various small racing series as well as the ARCA series, he ran his first NASCAR races in the early 1980s. In 1985, car owner Hoss Ellington gave him the chance to start in a Winston Cup race for the first time at the Talladega 500. Allison made the most of the opportunity and finished 10th.
During his nine-year NASCAR career, Davey Allison started around 280 races and scored 19 wins and 123 top-10 finishes across both Cup series.
Davey Allison died in 1993 when a helicopter he was piloting himself crashed while on approach to land at Talladega Superspeedway.
