Bruce Larson

Bruce Larson began drag racing at the age of 16 with a modified ’32 Ford coupe. Over the following ten years, he piled up win after win with that car, followed by a ’54 Oldsmobile and a 1932 Chevrolet A/Gas coupe.

In 1965, Bruce Larson switched from coupes to a ’64 Ford Cobra and immediately set several records in the NHRA A/Sport and AA/Sport classes. He also won the NHRA Spring Nationals, the Winter Nationals, and the U.S. Nationals with the Cobra.

Around this time, Bruce Larson was working at a Chevrolet dealership, and together with the owner, Greg Sutliff, he eventually built up a Chevy-based Funny Car team. They constructed a Chevy Camaro with a fiberglass body and ran match races across the country.

In 1967, Bruce Larson broke the all-time Funny Car record with the Camaro, running a fabulous 7.41 seconds. Two years later, he gained national attention when he won the Super Stock Nationals. Larson then bolted a “USA-1” license plate onto the car and painted it red, white, and blue.

Larson had no primary sponsor until he signed a deal with Datcon/Sentry in 1985. That same year, he also switched from Chevrolet to Oldsmobile, teamed up with world champion Joe Amato, and shortly afterward hired sprint car driver Maynard Yingst as crew chief to get the car dialed in perfectly.

1989 began for Bruce Larson with a win at the Winternationals. Over the course of the year, he won the Springnationals, the Mile-High Nationals, the Seafair Nationals, the Fallnationals, and the Winston Finals. He also finished runner-up at five other events. He led the points standings from the first race to the last of the season, earning the 1989 NHRA Funny Car national championship.
He was also named Funny Car Driver of the Year by Car Craft magazine.
