The 1985 Buick Regal and Ron Bouchard
Ronald “Ron” Bouchard was an American race car driver in the NASCAR series and won the “Rookie of the Year” title in his first Cup season in 1981. His brother Ken Bouchard won that title in 1988.

Bouchard’s NASCAR career began in 1981, when he drove the #47 Buick for the Race Hill Farm Team and immediately made a name for himself as “Rookie of the Year.”
That same year he won the Talladega 500. While Darrell Waltrip and Terry Labonte were locked in a fierce duel, the young Bouchard slipped past both of them and, to everyone’s surprise, crossed the finish line first. It would remain his only Cup win.
Ron Bouchard died of cancer on December 10, 2015.
Buick’s first season was not until 1981, and it was a rocket start. Darrell Waltrip won the championship in a Buick with 12 wins and 21 top-5 finishes.
The runner-up, Bobby Allison, also drove a Regal. And that wasn’t all, as more Buicks appeared in the top 10. Harry Gant secured 3rd place, Terry Labonte took fourth, Ricky Rudd sixth, and Richard Petty (who drove a Buick only during that season) finished 8th in the overall standings. What a start!
The 1982 season was even more successful for Buick. Darrell Waltrip again claimed the championship title, followed by Bobby Allison and Terry Labonte in second and third, Harry Gant in fourth, Dave Marcis in sixth, Ron Bouchard in eighth, and finally Morgan Shepherd in tenth. Seven of the top ten drivers drove a Buick!
During that racing season Buick took 25 individual wins, “closely” followed by Chevrolet with a whole three wins.
In 1983 the other manufacturers were able to close the gap a little, but still couldn’t match Buick’s success. That season’s champion again drove a Buick Regal: Bobby Allison.
Darrell Waltrip had switched to Chevrolet and finished second in the championship, and Harry Gant took seventh place.
The Model Kit
This Monogram model kit from 1985 is a Buick Regal.
The kit is molded in white with clear and chrome-plated parts and includes a complete “Valvoline” decal sheet.
The car is painted in two colors, so assembly is fairly straightforward overall. However, some painting experience is an advantage. This Monogram Buick Regal fits perfectly into the NASCAR Grayside rules.
