The 1991 Buick
For many years, Buick was the stand-in for Chevrolet in American motorsports. As early as the 1960s, Buick competed for the win at the Indianapolis 500 and (like most American automakers) fielded several cars in the Grand National stock car series.
However, the “golden age” of Buick in motorsports was the late 1980s and early 1990s. General Motors introduced the Regal, which made a splash primarily as a Grand National model and was a fierce competitor to the Oldsmobile Cutlass in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.
In the 1990s, however, Buick’s winning streak in motorsports came to an end, after GM replaced the brand with Oldsmobile for many years. Oldsmobile was finally replaced by Pontiac in 2004, and since 2009 Chevrolet has been GM’s sole representative in American motorsports.
Rick Wilson
Rick Wilson was born on January 31, 1953, in Bartow, Florida.
He began racing in 1980 and earned 23 top-10 finishes over the course of his career.
His most spectacular finish was certainly at the 1988 summer race at Daytona, when he finished second, running side by side with Bill Elliott and trailing him by only a few inches.
After “The King,” Richard Petty, retired from active racing, Rick Wilson took over his #44 car at Petty Enterprises.
The Model Kit
This 1991 Monogram model kit is a Buick Regal.
The kit is molded in white with clear and chrome-plated parts and includes a complete “Snickers” decal sheet.
The car is painted in a single color, so assembly is relatively straightforward overall. This Monogram Buick Regal fits perfectly into the NASCAR Grayside rules.
