The 1991 Ford Thunderbird and Alan Kulwicki

The year 1991 did not begin in a way that you could call promising for the AK Racing team. Alan Kulwicki’s Ford Thunderbird had no sponsor, Zerex had cancelled after the previous season, and money was tight.

Junior Johnson came knocking and offered Kulwicki $1 million to drive for him. Alan Kulwicki turned him down, however, because a sponsorship deal with Maxwell House Coffee was close to being finalized. But things turned out differently. Junior Johnson landed the Maxwell House deal for himself, and AK Racing was left empty-handed.

At the 1991 season opener, the #7 received a “one race” sponsorship from the US Army. A total of five cars ran with an Army paint scheme, an absolute first in NASCAR.

For the second and third races of the season, the white Ford Thunderbird ran without a sponsor, and Kulwicki had to pay all costs out of his own pocket. Eventually, though, the tide turned for AK Racing, as Hooters switched from the unsuccessful Mark Stahl to Alan Kulwicki.

At first it was for a single race in Atlanta, which Kulwicki finished in 8th place. Hooters stayed with Kulwicki. And so did the success.

Alan Kulwicki won the night race at Bristol, scored 11 top-10 finishes in the following 29 races, took four poles, and finished the season in 13th place.

One year later, Kulwicki’s dream of winning the championship would come true: he became champion in 1992.

The Model Kit

This Monogram model kit from 1991 is a Ford Thunderbird.
The kit is molded in white with clear and chrome-plated parts and includes a complete “AK Racing” decal sheet as well as a photo.

The car is painted in a single color, which makes assembly quite easy overall. This Monogram Ford Thunderbird fits perfectly into the NASCAR 124 rules.
